Simple signs you’re ready to have a baby

So, you’re thinking of having a baby? Everyone you know is having babies, you smile when those nappy adverts come on the TV and you send pictures of babies doing funny things to your friends. You’ve talked about it and feel like it might be time to start a family of your own. But how do you know if you’re really ready? Here are a few simple tell-tale signs:

1. You notice babies everywhere

You peer into other people’s prams at the supermarket, points out cute babies and loiter when you walk past the park. All signs that you’re thinking about pushing the pram and playing in the park with your own kids.

2. You’re spending more and more time at home

If you’re spending Saturday nights in when you used to spend them at the pub, then you’re ready for the almost complete loss of your social life, and quiet nights in front of the TV that come with a newborn baby.

3. Your finances are in order

Having children is an expensive business and you’re juggling childcare costs with running your home. If you are a woman who worked for most of her adult life, are you prepared for losing a bit of your financial independence while your partner supports you? And do you have enough savings for the initial expense of preparing for a child?

4. Your best friend has a baby

People often subconsciously emulate those close to them that they admire: if your best friend has had a baby and lived to tell the tale then the chances are you’re looking forward to the day when you can share stories of motherhood together.

5. You’ve already chosen your baby names

And told all your friends so that they don't steal your favourite names…you're ready!

6. You feel you’ve accomplished a significant amount in your life

Have you done all the things you imagined you would do before a baby came along? Have you travelled to far-flung destinations, and danced all night long? Having a baby doesn’t mean your life will stop, but these things will be much easier to achieve before you have another human being to take care of..

7. You’ve bought a puppy or a kitten

Having an animal to dote on is just one small step away from being ready to look after a baby – a sign you might be ready to take the next step!

8. You don’t mind moving if you have to

Your small but perfectly formed studio may be great for just the two of you, but it’s not very practical for a baby or two. Are you ready to move to a less expensive area, or spend money on more space? If you’re prepared to give up your beloved bachelor/bachelorette pad then you’re ready for a baby!

9. You sometimes pop into baby stores

Even though you don’t have a baby yet, you sometimes pop into baby stores to look around, and coo over the tiny baby clothes. You’ve even pretended to be buying a present for a friend so you can get expert advice from the shop assistant.
