Take plenty of entertainment in the boot, card games work well for long journeys. Also take water to stop paying silly prices at garages.

never let them go on a long trip without food at lest 2/3 books to read and some good c/ds which they have picked

Start out early so they fall asleep for part of the journey and make plenty of stops along the way.
